Frequently Asked Questions

Cupping therapy typically does not hurt, but the sensation can vary depending on individual tolerance and the technique used.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Mild to Moderate Pressure: Cupping creates a suction that pulls the skin and underlying tissues upward. This can feel like deep pressure or a pulling sensation.
  • Warmth:  In some methods, particularly with **fire cupping**, you may feel warmth from the heat used to create the suction, but it usually does not burn or hurt.
  • Tightness: You may feel tightness in the area where the cups are placed, as the skin is being drawn into the cup.

 After Effects:

  • Bruising: Cupping often leaves temporary round marks or bruises, which can range in color from red to purple. These marks are not painful, but they may feel slightly tender, like a mild muscle soreness, for a day or two.
  • Tenderness: After the session, you might experience some mild soreness or sensitivity in the treated area, similar to the feeling after a deep tissue massage.

Pain Factors:

  • Intensity of Suction: If too much suction is applied, the sensation may become uncomfortable. Skilled therapists adjust the suction level to match your comfort.
  •  Pre-existing Conditions:If you have sensitive skin, inflammation, or injuries in the area being treated, cupping might feel more uncomfortable.

For most people, cupping is more relaxing than painful. However, it's important to communicate with your therapist during the session if you feel discomfort, so they can adjust the pressure.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the cup marks (or bruises) left after cupping therapy carry significant diagnostic and therapeutic meanings. These marks vary in color, shape, and intensity, and are believed to reflect the body's internal condition and the nature of any imbalances or pathogens.

Meaning of Cup Marks in TCM:

  • Dark purple or blackish marks:

These suggest blood stasis (poor blood circulation or stagnation). This is often seen in cases of chronic pain or long-term illness, where blood flow is obstructed.

  • Bright red or deep red marks:

This indicates heat in the body, which could mean excessive internal heat or inflammation  in a specific area. It is often seen in conditions related to fever, infection, or inflammation.

  • Light red or pink marks:

These suggest the body has  mild coldness or qi deficiency(weak energy flow). It usually occurs in individuals with mild conditions or general weakness in their body.

  • No marks or very faint marks:

This generally indicates smooth blood and qi flow and that the person is in relatively good health. It may also mean that the area treated is free from significant stagnation or imbalance.

The colour and intensity of the marks help practitioners assess the patient’s health, and guide further treatment. They typically fade after a few days and are not considered harmful.
